An unforgettable night
…..
Chapter VIII: When the older brothers marry
There are a vast amount of reminiscences of my childhood, inextricably linked to my grandfather. Among all these recollections, one stands out, forever present, with all its clarity and in each minute detail; it has impressed itself in such a way that not even the passing of the years has diminished it, in the least bit. These particular memories live with me in the recesses of my soul, and I will carry them lovingly to my grave.
I was a child and we were gathered indoors at home that evening. The night’s stillness, that usual moment of calm I always found so pleasant, had been violently interrupted. Outside in the streets, the sounds of the riotous head-on clash between the so-called guerrilla and the National Guard or Contras could distinctly be heard, and deafeningly carried into the house. Painfully I was to learn, that certain sensations are stored permanently in our soul. Thus, when I turn to behold that little girl, whom many a year ago… I once was, I picture her in my mind, as she has been overcome by an indomitable terror. I observe how she is shaking with fear, her perplexed eyes ever so wide. That is when, once again, I relive those terrible sensations that had invaded and dominated me on that frightening night.
