We were positively a big family: my parents, my nine siblings, and of course, myself. We lived with my grandparents, together with Grandfather’s sisters, Miss Carmela and Miss Josefina. All in all, we all lived quite happily together, tucked in under that same roof, in that huge, old, beautiful mansion that belonged to my grandparents and had belonged to my great-grandparents before.

As the years went by, it became crystal-clear that my aunts would never marry. Their life was completely dedicated to a multitude of assorted religious activities, so abundant in the churches in León, and in many other parts of the world as well. There they would spend their days, conceivably volunteering or just visiting, at some church or another. In their spare time, which compared to my mother´s was lavishly plentiful and copiously abundant, they devoted themselves to a more colorful task and an endless activity. In a way, they were collectors, specialists, so to speak, in the fine arts of acquiring, trading and obtaining utterly useless information, generally known as gossip. This was their favorite pastime and hobby. They had an unfathomable capacity, to collect and discuss the most personal and intimate details of everybody else’s life and affairs, extending way beyond the neighbors and the city to ultimately penetrating into the depths of the Nicaraguans’ lifestyle. And frankly, they excelled at their unofficial occupation!
