“We then got into a discussion and things began to get out of hand, but then you grandmother, who is a natural-born diplomat, convinced him to consider it a special case and to proceed. You see that I’m not the only person that can’t say no to Manuela?”

I just had to laugh because Grandfather pulled one of his anguished faces and it really was funny. He was an excellent comedian!

“Then what happened?” I asked still laughing.

Grandfather replied, as he refreshed the drinks for everybody. They were drinking Victoria beers and I was drinking ice-cold lemonade. “He put his black bag on a table your grandmother had prepared for the occasion. It had a fine embroidered linen tablecloth, and there were refreshments for everybody. But the best was a bottle of Nicaragua’s finest rum. It was a Special Edition XXI Year Rum in an exquisite ceramic bottle that’s imported from Mexico. Your grandmother has it still in one of the cabinets in the dining room.”

“Which was the cause of a major battle between the two men. I’ll tell you Francisca that some men can be so obstinate!” she said as she glared at Grandfather.
