     In any event, immediately realizing the perilous circumstance he was in, without so much as an instant’s hesitation, he squared his shoulders and stood tall and straight. With a disciplined attitude, coupled with a commanding voice, he addressed the sergeant in command:

     “Ten hut! Sergeant, do you see these bars on my uniform?” He demanded curtly.

     “Yes, sir!” He was promptly answered.

     ““Sergeant, do you know how to count to three?”

     “One, two, three. Sir!”

     “Attention! I did not instruct you to count. I repeat! Sergeant, do you know how to count to three?”

     Yes, Captain, Sir!

     “Very well, Sergeant. You’re not as dumb as you seem. Tell me how many bars do you see on my uniform, and how many do you see on your own?”

     “I see three bars on your uniform, Sir! I have no bars on mine, Captain, Sir!”

     “Precisely, I knew you couldn’t be. Does anybody have more stripes similar to mine, or is someone present wearing stars on their uniform, Sergeant?”

     “No, Sir! On both counts, Captain, Sir”

     “Then I am the ranking officer at the moment, Sergeant.
