     Lately, he clearly realized the danger in not having chosen sides. He was completely aware, how the risk greatly increased each day. Finally, he decided between the Sandinistas or the US-backed government Contras, with his heart and his feelings, after searching deep inside for the best course for his family, friends and for his country, as well. He felt relieved. For better or for worse, the constant nagging in the back of his mind was gone.

     To his great surprise, he found a patrol of the Sandinistas. The troopers were waiting for him to arrive, and were under orders to arrest him on sight, charged with treason and conducting acts against the Revolution (which in reality meant that he was arrested for not having signed up and could be shot).

     Grandfather had arrived to the house in excellent spirits, ready to show off his new uniform to Grandmother and the rest of the family. It’s said that he looked impeccably sharp, in his officer’s outfit. In any event, immediately realizing the perilous circumstance he was in, without so much as an instant’s hesitation, he squared his shoulders and stood tall and straight.
