That was the last time we flew together. It was the end of a series of many wonderful occasions, we shared between us. Those wonderful moments that included lessons beyond the geography or history of Nicaragua; even though we unequivocally covered them, in quite a detailed way.

Grandfather interweaved a progression of intrinsically valuable life lessons, and these teachings of his, affected me in a simple, but most profound manner. He gave so much of himself, as we undertook our fabulous forays into the Nicaraguan skies. I believe, the most important thing, he imprinted on my yet tender soul, was the thorough depth and the intensity, of his zest for life. That was the legacy he left behind: to learn how to enjoy sharing your life with those around you. He also taught me to frame that love, in a deep-seated caring and respect: for our amazing roots, for our remarkable history, and most importantly, for the knowledge of our own selves. Fundamentally to view life, as the most cherished and glorious personal adventure, and to understand how it deserves to be fully lived, categorically celebrating each instant.

It was also, one of the last times that he flew dusting the cotton crops. In 1979, a short time after the Sandinista Air Force was formed, he joined them along with his trusty airplane. He was enrolled as an officer, with the rank of a Captain. With his personality, that could only mean one thing. It was the beginning of a series of other and new adventures, as he fulfilled his role in the war; but those are stories that must be left for another time…

I am truly convinced that my grandmother, Manuela, with her deep insight, summed it up, as only she could. One day, as she was talking about him, she said the following:

“Jairito was so busy living his life and pursuing his dreams, he just never realized that the world had moved on, and he was no longer a child; for if not in soul, in body, he had grown up…”
