“Did they stay on as slaves?” I asked, interested in the story.

“No, eventually rumors about what happened here spread to Jamaica. Later on, as a result, slaves from Jamaica began to escape and come over to start a new life as free people. With the years, the population grew. British, French and Dutch were attracted and arrived in great numbers. Some were surely pirates and some said they were not. There’s even a Chinese community established here.”

      “Are we landing here?”

“Why, you got a craving for Chow Mein?” he asked with a smirk on his face. “Nope kid, I got us a better idea. We’re going to splurge on a delicious seafood feast. We have forty kilometers to go, and will get to Pearls Lagoon or Laguna de Perlas soon. It was the second largest city on the Atlantic Coast when the Mesquite king lived here. Wait till you see it; its beauty is overwhelming. It’s called the Granada City on the Mesquite, and in a way, that’s about right! I love this small city. You see, it has the right size; it’s not too big, but neither too small. It’s built on the coast next to a lagoon with fresh blue waters, right on the spot!
