“Passengers will please fasten their seat-belts for we are about to … land!” He playfully announced. “We’re going to visit a good friend of mine; besides, we are also going to deliver a box full of machine spare parts for his boat.”

“How strange,” I answered without letting the sarcasm show in my voice.

“What’s strange, that we should land here?” he asked surprised at my remark. “This is a good landing spot and better than Rivas.”

“What’s strange is that you should have friends here.” I answered.

The tropical and almost suffocating heat of the coast was waiting for us on landing. Without giving us a chance to defend ourselves, we started to transpire. A surprisingly tall man was waiting for us. His skin was so dark that it looked blueish. Laughing, both men embraced in a wild bear hug. Afterwards, Grandfather performed the introductions, and he gave me his hand with a wide smile, stretching from one ear to the other. Then he grabbed me by the waist and gave me a hug, as he said: “Allow me to introduce myself: I am the notorious, but well-loved, don Jaime Rivera; of course, for you my dear, I am simply Jaime.” Putting me back on the ground, he continued with his speech.

“Welcome to Greytown: if not the end of the world, Greytown is without doubt, the end of Nicaragua, for here it is, that our wonderful country, finally, and most sadly ends. Why, if by any offhand chance you just happened to spit to your right, there might be those that construe it to be an offense, because, it will fall on Costa Rica, that is to say, the Coast that is Rich. Now if, mind you, this is but a supposition, you spit to your left: well, that’s the Nica Coast, or the Coast that’s not so Rich,” he said with a sardonic smile.

“Thank you very much don Jaime, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Perhaps Grandfather was distracted, and that is how we lost our way. For if I’m not mistaken, we weren’t headed for Greytown; we were supposed to land in San Juan.” I was truly pleased to meet him, for he had a generous smile and a warm voice, though his accent was admittedly funny.
