Nobody knows what tomorrow may bring

“Are there many earthquakes in this region?” Jean Marie asked as he thought about what he had just heard, a worried tone in his voice showed through. This talk about quakes and tectonic activity was not part of the Colombian adventure he had set out to enjoy in these Latin American lands.

“Yes, Sir, but well, we are very close to the Colombian Massif. This zone is a bit to the south of us, in the Cauca area, and its where the Andes Range divides into three massive mountain chains. You can imagine the tremendous forces that it takes to split the Andes mountains into three separate ridges, that surely is not an easy task! We are close by to that geologically active section, and for that reason, once in a while, we feel the earth trembling, but that is to be expected, wouldn’t you agree?”

“However, don’t look so gloomy, that doesn’t happen every day,” he continued laughing merrily. “That earthquake was years ago, in 1999 to be precise. It almost razed our neighboring state. Here in Pereira City, our Capital, it also hit very hard! What’s more, all the coffee zone was heavily affected by that event, not just around these parts. But, I very much doubt that it will happen today, or tomorrow, for that matter… Nobody knows for sure what tomorrow may bring; still, that’s not a reason for staying up and awake all night long, is it?”
