The next day before the clock struck five a.m., we were up and at it, having had coffee and bread. Still, we managed to get to the Rivas Market by six thirty and eat a hefty breakfast. A dark-skinned woman said hello affectionately to Gramps. She obviously knew him well, as she greeted him by his name, smiling in a mysterious way. Before eight we were airborne.

We were still climbing, and as we gained altitude, slowly we left Rivas behind us, reaching Ometepe Island. The cool morning was cloudy and a bit misty, in the distance the Conception Volcano rose, crowned with clouds.

“King Kong is waiting for his girlfriend below those clouds, kiddo!”

“You know what, Grand Dad, I don’t doubt it, in the least,” I answered, gazing upon the eerie landscape. Dead ahead, the volcano’s cone had just thrust through the clouds that encircled its summit. A moment later, the sun shone through the cloud cover dispelling the sinister atmosphere. I replaced the colorful and peaceful memories of yesterday’s fresh garden in its stead. Immediately my spirits lifted, surpassing the heights of the amazing Conception Volcano. As I turned I caught the smile on Grandfather’s face!
