While they swapped jokes and laughed as loud as they could, the captain allowed me to take hold of the helm and steer, indicating how to stay on track. After a half hour had passed we began to close in on the island. Captain Zacarias took control of the helm and steered us into Moyogalpa, the main port on the island.

We got off at the dock and again, took off in a taxi. The taxi had evidently been through hard times, but the taxi driver was a really friendly man. I know that Grandmother would never believe me, but that taxi driver talked more than Grandfather! We drove down the main and, one and only, highway to the south. We arrived to our destination, a small town called Altagracia, in around a half hour and approximately twenty five kilometers of astounding landscapes.

Ometepe is a large island, almost thirty kilometers long. It has a hot tropical climate and is too humid for comfort. As the boat approaches the island, its main features capture the attention of the beholder. The silent presence of the two majestic and seriously imposing volcanoes, one placed on either tip of the island, is enough to spark and then fire the dullest imagination; especially as the boat gradually, slowly crawls closer to the island, and both volcanoes loom even taller and more threatening in the ever-approaching background. To the north lies the Conception Volcano, the bigger of the two. To the south rises the Maderas, not as big, but still impressive by far. As seen from the island, the Nicaragua Lake could easily be mistaken for the Atlantic Ocean, for it doesn’t look or feel like a lake. The tropical nature of the beaches is evident, for their beauty is immersed in dense lush vegetation that displays its exotic tonalities, as it embraces all the imaginable variations of green that solely Nature, in its wildest fantasies, would dream to conjure!
