“Summertime” is an aria composed in 1934 by George Gershwin. It was written for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. This song soon became a popular and much-recorded jazz standard, described as “without a doubt … one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote …”

Gershwin’s highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of the black population in the southeast United States during the early twentieth century. There are over 25,000 recordings of “Summertime”. One of the earliest productions dates back to September 1936. This is a recording by Billie Holiday. It was the first track to hit the US pop charts, reaching the twelfth place in popularity at that time.

The lyrics

Summertime

Summertime
And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich
And your ma is good lookin’
So hush, little baby
Don’t you cry

One of these mornin’s
You’re goin’ to rise up singin’
Then you’ll spread your wings
And you’ll take the sky
But till that mornin’
There’s a-nothin’ can harm you
With daddy and mammy
Standin’ by
