Chapter 12. The Atlantic Coast and its Caribbean pirates
Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Afterwards, Grandfather mentioned, in passing, how he had explained to them that after having eighteen children and more than fifty grandchildren, he was not an amateur, for he was a seasoned and experienced veteran of child-rearing. Also, he mentioned that, of course, he knew what to do, having been through the drill several times before. Yes, they could rest assured that everything would be fine. Just leave it in my hands. I have to hand it to Grandfather; when the principal walked me to the gate, I realized, she was in the best of moods.
The sun was rising in the sky, yet the day still felt a bit cool. We were carrying two light backpacks. The packs contained our clothes and some snacks (Grandfather called them the emergency rations, and he never traveled far without some). We also had a cardboard box with machine parts for one of Grandfather’s many friends. Happily on this occasion, it was a holiday, and we wouldn’t be dusting crops. I felt as happy as can be, for we had a few days journey before us and frankly, what a way to travel. Heading for the Caribbean on the plane! This represented an uncharted world to discover. I hadn’t traveled to the coast before; consequently, I was tremendously excited! Maybe the most appealing part of all this, was the undeniable fact that my classmates were at school; meanwhile, where was I? At the airport donning my goggles, sitting in my copilot’s seat and getting ready for takeoff!
Soon we saw the Managua Lake in the distance. I recognized and identified its twin volcanoes: the Momotombo and the Momotombito. Their silhouettes were clearly outlined in the distance, as we climbed to 7, 500 feet. At that height we had a breathtaking view of the lake below. From above, we appreciated it all at a glance.
