“Anyway, on that day I was with my brother, Diego. We were drinking cold beers, Victorias, to ward off the heat; the big ones. On that particular day, the place was packed with gringos. They were happily going about their beers and rum. We were sitting at the bar and talking about the war and stuff, Diego had just arrived from Esteli and Jinotega and we were catching up on things. He was telling me about the bombing raids in Esteli.”

Now that caught my attention, especially because my father was stationed at Esteli.

“That was when the earthquake began! You can´t imagine how that place began to move! And what to say about the gringos, they began to shout and finally ran out to the streets, as if the crazy guys had firecrackers on their tails.” Grandfather’s silly gestures made both of us laugh. “It was exactly like a cattle stampede back at the ranch!”

“And what did you two do, Jairo?” Grandmother asked nonchalantly, smiling good-naturedly.

“Hold on to our beers! And with both hands because those were big ones! You should have seen the waste that afternoon, such a sad scene. All those beers and rum shots spilled, it was a total devastation of perfectly good drinks! When it calmed down and stopped shaking, the gringos came back in to find all their liquor in ruins, spilled down the drain, so to speak. While the Nicaraguans sat in their places quietly finishing up their drinks before it began to tremble again…”
