“We’re talking about really complicated situations here, hon. Lots of cattle died from respiratory diseases. Also, many people got sick, because of the same sickness. The crops were devastated, so many were lost, covered in ashes. You see those islands in the middle of the Gulf. Well, some of them are just fragments of the volcano cone. With the force of the explosions, it launched them as if they were bombs forty kilometers out into the water. That’s one explosion you can take to the bank!”

We have many volcanoes in Nicaragua. Many of them are really huge. Thanks to Grandfather, after having seen most of them from above in the heights, indeed, I’m convinced that the Cosigüina Volcano is of another order of magnitude! Equally, we, the daughters and sons of these rugged lands of volcanoes; we find ourselves in a different order of magnitude, which is our key to survival…

“Pay attention chile, this is a lesson of survival, a matter of life or death!”

“Whatever are you talking about, Grandfather?”
“How to survive in the land of volcanoes! Tell me now, what’s the first thing to do when you feel an earthquake?”

“Go outside or look for shelter in a door frame”

     “Before that, hon”

     “Keep calm…”

“Always! Besides that, the most important thing you have to do”

“I give up, Grandfather. What is it?”

“Pay close attention. What I’m going to tell you will come in handy when you’re of age. Before any other thing, if you feel it’s beginning to shake…You pick up your drink, and you hold it firmly in one hand; then, you run out to the street!”
