Having said as much, Grandfather swerved to the north. We flew over Chinandega City; then we passed the port of Corinto and kept on flying north until we reached the huge Gulf of Fonseca, on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. There he showed me the biggest and most violent volcano in Nicaragua: the impressive Cosigüina Volcano!

“Look honey chile. That is without any doubt at all, a seriously mean volcano. Oh yeah! For starters, no other volcano has even come close to the explosions that came out of that volcano a hundred and fifty years ago. It is by far The Tata of Nicaraguan Volcanoes!” Seen from our vantage point it was indisputably imposing, gigantic, and majestic! Next to it, Cerro Negro resembled a little toy volcano, a miniature and nothing more. We climbed higher, and Grandfather showed me the borders between Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador, as well as how the vast Gulf of Fonseca was divided among the three countries.

“Look how the Hondurans hold half of the land; the other half is divided between Nicaragua and El Salvador. Now that volcano is almost the size of our part of the Gulf and it’s the biggest feature that you can distinguish from above.”
“Yes, Grandfather, I completely agree! That volcano is the first thing that you notice from up here. I wouldn’t want to think of it becoming active!”

“That eruption that I just mentioned continued for three whole days. The ashes reached out all the way to Mexico, Jamaica and Ecuador. Try to picture this. Smack in the middle of the day, everyone had to light candles to find their way around; it was pitch dark, so you couldn’t see! People who lived through it say that the Mexicans got scared out of their pants with the sound of one of the explosions. They heard it all the way down to Mexico, can you imagine?” What I did imagine, was the frightened Mexicans with their big sombreros, running around in circles, scared out of their wits by the explosions and shouting: “Caramba! Caramba..!”
