Chapter X: About coffee and after dinner digestives

“Once I went to lunch with this German business man. We had lunch in Managua City”, he began to tell me. He lazily picked up the candies, making a little mound with them on the bed.
“At the time, your dad was probably around seventeen years old. You had just been born a while before”, he continued in a low and thoughtful voice.
“You were a bit larger than a rat, maybe also somewhat cuter, and for sure with smaller teeth.”
“Thanks Gramps, I think… or maybe not.”
“You’re welcome of course, that´s what grandparents are for.”
“And what are grandparents for?”
“All the better to spoil you, my child!” He said as he made a face at me. “But hush and shush! Can´t you see that I´m trying to tell you a story? As I was saying, before I was so rudely interrupted…” Having said as much, he cleared his throat before carrying on.
“Now these Germans, certainly have given me a pause to think about. Listen and learn my dear. Sometimes, things come to pass in the most surprising ways. This happened about the time that Somoza, our notorious dictator, had just passed away. His corpse wasn’t even cold and buried, yet the German community was working on how to recover the goods he had taken away from them in 1941. In that year, the unprintable dictator declared the war against Germany. The Second World War was the ideal excuse to go ahead and confiscate all German properties and possessions. Most of the Germans established in Nicaragua, frankly, were doing fine and had made quite a fortune. Well, this son of a… took it all away from them, and he kept it all in his favorite piggy bank.”
Because Grandmother happened to enter, he paused for a moment with a sigh. She entered carrying a tray with a pitcher full of steamy hot chocolate and a large platter with cookies.
