Three years later, she was pregnant once again, yet she still could not adapt to the city’s hot climate. Once more, she scarcely would eat; it could be said that the poor woman survived on all sorts of liquids. It was said, as well, that this was the reason why her two daughters were so slender, and also, why they manifested an impressive capacity for drinking all kinds of liquids, particularly rum and spirits, which they merrily drank as if they were drinking water.

The Marroqui sisters’ father was passionate about betting and all the types of gambling venues available. Every single week, without fail, he participated in two lottos: The Baloto and The Chance lotteries. Since his bets were always low, he either won or lost little of his money. Even though he was not living in Manizales anymore, he still kept on playing the Manizales Lottery too, always keeping faith in that one day he would win big with it.

When Carito was going to reach her sixth birthday, he announced that his luck was about to change for the better, for both the Baloto and the Manizales Sweepstakes would be up for grabs on that day! Categorically sure of himself, he bet all his savings and even borrowed more money to gamble on that lucky streak. How surprised everyone was, mostly himself, when it turned out that he won not only one, but both grand prizes. He was beyond delighted with his good fortune! The parents decided that they had endured the heat long enough, and they opted on buying a farm where the climate was more to their liking.
