Oscar listened, entirely taken in by their unique story, but mostly by the enthusiasm and the folkloric expressions used by the brothers. With Gabriel, he had managed to get used to the Mexican slang and phrases, as well as, to their accent, but now, he found it difficult not start laughing at every turn of that lively and extremely descriptive conversation. He felt like if he were living one of those old, black and white, Mexican movies, in which he now participated and in full living color.

Doctor Carmona took the lead. “My esteemed colleague, I was at the other end of the corral. I was, at the moment, quite busy, checking one of the mare’s horseshoes. That’s when I turned around and saw this lovely young woman sitting on Aslan’s back. My jaw didn’t drop to the floor because it was most firmly and happily attached to the rest of myself!” He said smiling from ear to ear. “That horse is the toughest customer. He’s beyond me and out of anybody else’s reach. He’s the only one of all our horses, I haven’t ever dared to ride, nor do I have any intention of doing so. He’s too smart for his own good, in other words, that’s simply why he’s the herd’s leader. Amazed, I walked over and stood there staring at that this gal as gets off the horse, but, mind you, this she does without even using her hands! With the greatest of ease, she gently slides down his side, puts out her hand to me, and then, greets me with that little Colombian accent of hers and the most charming smile.”

After a slight pause, the doctor kept on talking, “I was in the middle of that when I see the boys coming in. They were running like if they hadn’t paid the entry tickets and somebody was chasing them. Oswaldo stares rigidly at the girl and asks her, in the voice that could freeze running water: Good morning, miss. Excuse me, but who gave you permission to enter these grounds. This is a restricted area and access is only allowed to the circus personnel. The girl, quite cute by the way, answers him, without a worry in the world, while patting Azlan’s neck. Good morning to you, so sorry, excuse me and all that stuff, but this gentleman, here, invited me in and to ride a little while with him, she replied, pointing to Azlan.”
