      “Well then, where were we? Yes, we had just bought this house from Jairo’s mother, your great-grandmother Leonor. She was going about her plans and getting ready to move to the States. She went to live in Dakota, but came back after a couple of years. She insisted the food didn’t agree with her, but the truth is she loved Nicaragua and missed it terribly.”

     “Anyway, Jairo was on some kind of a business trip, like usual, and the children, who at that time were only your dad, Angélica, and Daniel, had stayed over for the weekend with a neighbor in Chinandega. Would you believe I had eighteen children, but I never got used to the simple fact that I was a mother? It was so absorbing my dear. To be a mom is a full-time job, and frankly I had so many interests to pursue; so to be on my own, was a sort of vacation.

     “In any case, I was going through the house with Doña Leonor. She was pointing out all the details of the house that needed maintenance or getting fixed. The sort of minor things you have to look after in any house, like part of the electrical wiring, some spots with humidity on the walls or a few leaks here and there. Anyhow dear, we were standing right here, in this very spot, where you and I are standing now…
