At that moment, I caught this exquisite fragrance in the air. For some reason or other, it reminded me of Christmas. When I told Grandmother she listened very seriously and for a short while was very thoughtful.

After a pause she asked me, “Do you see that mango tree? When Jairo and I bought this house, back in the sixties, I was about to celebrate my eighteenth birthday.”

Again she hesitated, while she was quietly thinking; it seemed as if she had gone back to the sixties. “Your father was a little more than two years old, and he was already starting to talk. Once he began to talk, nobody could make him stop, even nowadays! But you know that better than anyone does. Your Aunt Angélica was a little over a year old, and your Uncle Daniel was still a baby in diapers, wetting the bed, if you will, barely a few months old. You could say I was working on the next baby, with only fifteen more to go. I guess your Grandpa and I were quite busy in that respect!”

She explained laughing and with a bright twinkle in her eyes. There was an enigmatic smile that appeared on her lips. It was so typical of her, and her eyes were full of life as she smiled.
