And it was to the shout of:

“Who causes all this happiness?” when performed at the top of their lungs that these groups would stop at an altar, crying out loudly from the street. Everybody carried bags; some were made out of paper, others were made from plastic or cloth. They were indispensable to carry the gifts they would receive, from the people inside the house and next to the altar. The gifts would be handed out, once the people inside had answered back, shouting together in chorus: “The Conception of Virgin Mary!”

Now the gifts could be anything from sweets and candies to toys. As a rule, they were inexpensive. During the hard times, the gifts would be of a more practical nature, perhaps assorted items like soap bars, fly swatters, or maybe even tins or cans with food, to take back to the empty cupboards at home.

These festivities celebrated the end of two intense months of ash-fall in the city, back in the year of 1947. The ashes fell due to the violent eruptions, from the volcano called “Cerro Negro” (The Black Hill) and located close to León.
