“To the to the right way of things, my friend. From what I gather, there’s nothing like being right in the middle of the right way of it all,” Gabriel ironically commented as he raised his cup in a toast.

“For now, I’m happy just by getting to know my way around the world,” Oscar said. “I’ve been working for more than thirty months in different parts of Ecuador. In all that time, I have learned a lot. It seems to me that every person I had encountered has left a lesson behind for me. What’s more, they’ve given me an important part of themselves, which I’ve gladly kept for my own personal benefit. This is something I can do at my present age. Unless you can prove me wrong, I consider myself as still young. If I don’t do this now, perhaps I may never have the chance again. So, for the moment, I’ve no destination, no route to follow, not even a dog to call my own, my dear Gabriel. Unquestionably, I’ve mastered the art of being my own boss. Maybe I’ll never settle down, like the rare mails I receive from my mother urge me to do,” he remarked that night, all the while, as they quietly enjoyed their wine from nearby Chile.

This was the fourth-night in which they had enjoyed their dinner together. Afterward, both shared long hours deep in conversation. In a short time, they had gotten to know each other well enough. Still, up to that moment, Gabriel had not revealed the reason that had brought him to Lima.

When Gabriel heard this last comment, he began to laugh. It was a long, spontaneous and frank laughter that disconcerted Oscar, who quietly stared at him. Suddenly Oscar joined in, sharing the moment until he finally managed to ask what they were laughing about.
