Deep down inside of himself, Oscar felt at ease. He was confident that his father’s estate was in good hands. Jacinto, from whom he had learned most everything he knew about farming would surely be in charge and administering the farm. With savings in his pocket and after six months of intense work at don Enrique’s farm, Oscar decided to hit the road and keep on going south.

The world was so tantalizingly big and with so much to discover. Don Enrique was very grateful for his contributions to the farm. He recommended him to his friends, both farmers and stock-breeding ranchers who had other farms in different parts of Ecuador. So, Oscar set out to find his place in the world. That was how, on one of those breathtaking sunny Ecuadorian mornings, he headed to the highlands of that wonderful country, on his journey southward.

It was two additional years before Oscar finally arrived at the border with Peru. He traveled the impressive Ecuadorian highlands intensely and enjoyed that Andean flavor, so characteristic of its cities and picturesque towns. He relished those lands by the Chimborazo and the Cotopaxi volcanoes with their landscapes in between the mountains. These would be impressed upon his imagination and his heart for the rest of his life.
