A few hours later, it was all over. Aurora was beaming and feeling very happy! She had done her share of the labors, and a beautiful black pony lay right by her side. It had white spots on its knees and on the forehead also. It was past midnight when they finally could sit down to a late dinner. The nervous crisis was over, and they shared a toast to Aurora’s health. It was then that don Enrique asked Oscar to stay on with them at the farm, to take care of the animals, and help with the cocoa crops.

For the next six months, Oscar worked at the farm and helped with the chores. All that time, he saved his paychecks and managed to put away some money. The most important thing for Oscar was to self-affirm himself and realize that he indeed have the abilities and preparation to earn his way through life, without depending on his parent’s, away from Barichara and in another country.

That was the main reason he had taken charge of his parent’s farm, in Barichara, since he was very young. His father, having realized that he could take care of things, let go of that responsibility and turned to a social life, leaving the administration of the house to his older son. But now it was time to reap the rewards and the benefits of many years of working for free at home.
