They were about to reach the farm when the conversation centered on crop-related issues. In particular, Miguel Enrique was concerned about a pest that seemed to affect the coffee. They went through different options to control the infestation. Oscar, having grown up on a coffee farm, was familiar with this pest and offered his help. He commented on certain precautions to take in the plant nursery were they were growing new plants to expand their production, Miguel Enrique was against using chemical pesticides. He listened attentively, while Oscar explained alternative ways of fighting the plague. So, it turned out that his friend expressed his interest in having Oscar stay for a while and help them, and offered him a job at the farm. Though definitely worried about the coffee plants, Miguel Enrique’s real concern, at the moment, was his father’s mare.

It turned out that Aurora, his father’s favorite mare, was pregnant, and she was about to give birth for the first time. The veterinarian that attended their farm was at a livestock expo, at the moment, and he wouldn’t come back until the end of the week. Apparently, there was not enough time to wait for him to return, for clearly, she had displayed the initial labor symptoms, since very early that same morning. Miguel Enrique had already looked for another vet, but he wasn’t available either.
