There were only two possibilities. Either head north or head south. Nothing could be easier. To the north, he would encounter a problem. The highway was interrupted between Colombia and Panama. The break in the highway was known as the Dorien Gap. Besides, he had already traveled the Caribbean coastline before, when he had visited the walled-city of Cartagena, Santa Martha and the tropical lands that stretched out to Venezuela and ended in Cabo de Vela, the northernmost tip of the South American continent.

Since he had already explored his way towards the north, it was a simple and easy decision. Without more, he chose to go south and head to Ecuador, as a first step. He’d decide the second step once he was out of the country. And, when that moment arrived, he’d think about it.

That was how he arrived in Armenia, one of the capitals of the Colombian coffee zone. It was still early afternoon, so he decided to stay overnight, and head to the border, early the next morning. He had advanced a long way and felt both free and happy about it. After leaving his things in a hotel by the terminal, he went out to find a place to eat. It was then when he realized the magnitude of what he had done that day and what had happened to his life. His former life, the one corresponding to all those days that had gone by before yesterday, had remained behind, together with a note for his mother, that now was many hours and kilometers behind him.

The note was brief, concise and to the point, tailor-made to his parent’s personality. He only mentioned that he had left to find his place in the world. He asked his parents not to worry about him. (As if it were possible for them to worry about anything, and especially about him!). In that short note, Oscar promised to let them know, as soon as he did, in what part of the world he had decided to settle and find his fortune and build a future. A very dry note, for equally dry parents!
