All in all, it was a question of learning from experience. So it happened that on the following day, after that incident with the candle, that a bottle of Four Year Old Rum appeared on the altar (the white and economical rum that Grandfather reserved for mixing and to prepare mojitos). Also, whenever Grandfather arrived at home, Grandmother would place a silver tray on top of the nightstand. There on the tray would be a bottle of the fine, exquisite Seven Year Old Special Reserve. Next to it she would place an ice tray, full to the brim, and a pitcher of cold clear water. Grandmother would state categorically on the subject:

“It will never again be said in this house, that we throw away a good liquor just to put out a fire, like it sorrowfully happened on that dreadful occasion. God in his wisdom invented rum to turn on a fire, never to put it out!”
