He spent a few years, formally, in charge of the coffee farm, though for many years before, he had been managing it informally. Since he was a young boy, he had begun to work for the town’s veterinarian, Andres Valencia, respected by all in the region. In the afternoons, after school, he arrived at the veterinarian clinic & shop where he helped out with the chores. Oscar liked to say he was the vet’s assistant. But, the truth of the matter, is that he learned much more while he was working with the veterinarian than he did during the five years at the University.
He also continued learning during all those years in which he was in charge of the family’s coffee farm. As it turned out, his father didn’t care in the least about the farm’s affairs and his younger brother didn’t either. So it had been to Oscar to make sure that things ran smoothly at the farm.
All this broadened Oscar education and prepared him for life in a most impressive way. He understood how to care for the coffee crops, as well as he did the bean or yucca crops. He was well versed in the farm-life and could handle problems with the birthing of a calf, taking care of a sick milking cow and the correct nutrition and cares of the egg-laying hens. In so many words, since Oscar was a little boy, he had become a farm boy, and he was one of the best, at that!
One good day, he decided to pack his things in a knapsack. The time had arrived for him to chase his dream, which he had nurtured in his heart for many years. When he finished packing his stuff, he realized how ambivalent his wealth and poverty were. All his material possessions could snugly fit into a small, black backpack, readily hung to his back and with a total weight of eight kilograms, plus a few additional grams. He pondered his situation philosophically for a few moments: it’s enough and with some to spare, he thought, smiling. His personal worth in life clarified, he went on with his plans.
