Always a sensible girl, Dora felt it was the time for her to inquire about her grandfather’s death. It was something they had never talked about, and she was naturally curious to know more about her grandfather, how he had lived and died. When she asked her grandmother, Ines, explained sadly.

These nocturnal visits continued to happen on various occasions. The loneliness of the farm didn’t offer any opportunities for protecting ourselves from these armed groups ravaging the countryside. Sometimes it was the liberals that arrived; other times, it was the conservatives. Ines then explained, how her husband would read about what was to happen that day, in his book, during the mornings. He was always prepared for the day’s events, precisely, for those reasons. And, he would comfort her, saying:

We’re lucky today, mija. Nothing is going to happen to us, today!

“So our lives went by, sometimes we were scared; sometimes we were happy.” her grandmother continued unhappily.
One day, Dora’s grandfather arrived looking very serious and worried. He told Adrian and Daniel to go to town, and he ordered that they stay there, until he went to fetch them. He took Miguel and Ines to a hidden cave nearby. Inside, there were provisions and a couple of cots. He then handed grandmother a sealed, closed envelope. He told her to open it, but only if he hadn’t returned by dawn. Having done all this, he said goodbye, comforting her, and also assuring her that all would be well.
