“Diego had this special, extraordinary ability. What would you say, if I told you that your grandfather read the skies just like we read books, my dear? Diego didn’t like to read ordinary books, no, Ma’am! He would say that he had his own book: The book of his fortune, written in the skies.”

“His book, he used to say, would renew itself every day. It contained everything he could ever need to plan his days and manage the farm. Books printed on paper, he would affirm, are kind of dead. They can’t change and keep up with the times. He always got up early, before dawn. After drinking his coffee, he would go outside to read his book. If you could have only seen him return after reading his book.”

“If you could only have seen him return, after having read his book. He was full of energy, the day’s plans ready and eager to begin the day’s chores. Diego was like a fine racehorse at the starting line and before the grand prize race!”

“One morning, he returned with a face full of anguish; by God, I had never seen him so! No, never had I seen him so scared! He began to explain something about the colors of the sky. He said they were blood colors, and then went on to talk about dark clouds on the horizon. After a while, he calmed down. He came close to me and said:

Mija, as he used to call me, there are calamities waiting for today. Listen to me and listen very well. These have nothing to do with the day’s chores. Right now, at the moment, I really don’t understand what it’s all about. What I do know is that it’s evil and prowling around in the air. But, my love, you keep cool. You’ll see how today turns out to be our lucky day; because, in the end, my death has still not been written in the dark clouds overhead.”
