With one eye on the job

The child had visited as many worlds as the books she had read, and those were many…

Camila’s parents differed enormously from Magnifico’s folks, for they were incredibly strict and very conservative in their way of thinking. At four o’clock in the morning, while it was still pitch dark outside, the child could be found in the hen’s shack with a long to do list of chores to be finished before she could head to school.

Nevertheless, Camila was never in a hurry, nor did she worry her little head. She had her tasks perfectly timed and at her own pace, she would finish in time, but in her own quite peculiar way.

Since she began to feed the more than a hundred hungry hens who waited impatiently and at all any time of the day had a voracious appetite, until she finished cleaning out the different coops, Camila had one eye on one thing and the other eye somewhere else.

Better said, the little girl held an open book with one hand and used the other one for the chores, while she read and did her job at the same time and with no care in the world. Magnifico may have been an artist in the matter of exploring the heights, but Camila definitely held her own as to reading while she worked. And that child would read with an undying passion relishing each phrase.
